Wow! The second graders really did a fabulous job last week presenting the story, "The Lion and the Mouse!" They rose to the occasion - and behaved and performed like kids older than 2nd grade. Those xylophones rocked, the stretchy bands demonstrated the struggle of the lion, the singing was fabulous and super narration. The rest of the year the second graders will be finishing a unit on the classic, "Peter and the WOLF" and exploring instruments of the orchestra. Mr. Turini, Half Day orchestra director, will be bringing orchestra instruments to the classes for the children to play and introducing the Half Day Orchestra program. Look for sign up sheets to be coming home soon. A final 'recital day' will be offered June 1 for Lenzini, Salzman, Chiesa and June 2 for Merchen, Terson and Vani. Muller and Ferron will be scheduled shortly. I am very pleased with the accomplishments of our second graders and know that they are ready for all that Ms. Franz has planned for them as third graders! I will miss these kids - come back and visit:)
Kindergarten students did a fine job during their demonstration classes last week. Parents were invited to explore not only their classroom work, but also what's up in music classes. Singing, dancing, listening and speaking activities were highlighted and left all in attendance smiling as they left. There's lots to learn in kindergarten and these children will be ready for first grade.
First graders are busy, busy, busy!! Our nursery rhyme program is coming together nicely. While the children know the rhymes and the activities, putting it together to make it suitable for a presentation is another thing. The children are learning to keep track of where they are in songs - tracking musical form. This way they learn "first time we speak, second time we sing" and so on. Musicians' minds think in many different directions - we have to be fluid and flexible thinkers. The children are also learning about focus and performing skills that are essential to everyone in the audience having the best experience. Self-control is a vital part of performing. It would be great if you could also speak to your child about self-control and how adults work on this skill, too! I am very eager for all of you to experience what these children can do when they work together. See you on the 28th!
