Second graders are exploring phrase. In the video above, you will see students in Ms. Muller's 2nd grade class act out a rhythm pattern they have created. This little chunk is a phrase. In the next weeks, we will be combining these phrases into musical forms. Just like sentences are combined to form paragraphs, and eventually stories, these phrases will develop into bigger things, too!
Second graders are also exploring the fable, "The Lion and the Rat" or sometimes mouse. Aesop, and later in the 1600's LaFontaine, wrote this fable to teach youngsters a moral. We read this story in class and discussed what the children felt the moral to be. These were some great discussions! We will be building our portfolio presentation around this tale. African drumming, great singing, storytelling and creative movement will help us tell the tale. 2nd Grade Portfolio Day will be Thursday, May 7 between 1:30-3:15 pm. Mark Your Calendars!

First graders have been singing using solfege - so mi la's. These syllable allow us to explore melody in a basic way, and then add lyrics, and transfer to instruments. Once the children learned the syllables for the song, "Mouse, Mousie" they added lyrics and xylophones. Above you will see in the video clip two students placing cards in order for the text, the rhythm and then the solfege/notes. It was a great challenge for our students.
First graders are using nursery rhymes as a basis for music making this month. "The Missing Tarts" by B.G. Hennessey is the basis for our portfolio day performance. The classic Mother Goose rhymes and characters come to life when added to creative movement, instruments and the energy of 6 year olds. Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 28 from 1:30-3:15pm.

Kindergarten students have been exploring the concept of high and low. The children make sounds with their voices, they use their bodies to match high and low sounds, they even use yarn to trace melody lines. Students then created their own line/melody cards that we used in class. Taking it to the next level, the children incorporated mouth sounds in their drawings, and symbols for instruments, also. At this age, the terms up and down are often confused with loud and soft. Think about how we say, "Turn the music up" but we really mean louder. Kindergarten students are getting it right!
