Time has been flying as we begin to prepare for all the portfolio day presentations! 2nd graders are learning how many individual parts become something amazing when all put together. The students all learn the same music and activities, then each class is assigned a special part. As we work on these special sections the students are really learning to listen to each and develop performing skills. Focus - balance - facial and vocal expression - enunciation( we call it moving your lips, or spitting out the text) and energy are all necessary for a fine performance. They are probably getting tired of my favorite quote from Aristotle - "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is a habit not an act." Definitely. Each time we practice we must do so as if we are really performing. Excellence is easily identified. 2nd graders know when they've worked and achieved it. We hope you enjoy our hard work as we present, "The Lion and the Mouse" on May 7.
Kindergarten portfolio share is also coming up quickly - May 14. This will be an opportunity to see and hear what occurs in music classes. Listening, singing, moving, creating, analyzing, and playing instruments are daily activities. These activities will be woven into a sharing experience to better understand how musical skills develop in our youngest learners.
First graders are sharing their musical skills on Thursday, May 28. "The Missing Tarts" by BG Hennessy serves as the basis of our informance. The story references a variety of nursery rhymes, which provide great rhythmic structure for music learners. From that rhythmic base, the children are not only grasping rhyming patterns and rich language, but we can explore musical form, tone color, inner hearing, creative movement and melodic contour. What we share is basically what they have created in the classroom - just polished up a bit:)
