Kindergarten students are great at pretending. During the month of January, we explore the concept of snowflakes using feathers as an easy, and warmer substitution. The underlying concept we are working toward is up and down, and high and low pitch. The feathers give us a great way to experience a slow descent - which the children also played on xylophones as well as moved to. The yarn activity is another way the children explore high and low pitch. Each child makes a yarn 'line' and then copies it with their voice. Later in the month the children drew their own melody lines on paper, indicating the sound they wish us to use.. We are using these papers as our vocal warmups. Next step in melody exploration will be Ipads - using the app Tune Train - and then a larger written project where the children also indicate instrumental sounds in addition to the vocal sounds. These activities will strengthen the correlation between high and low images and high and low sounds in their voices. Laying the groundwork for note reading later on....
