There are some great apps to try. Some are even free:)
We have these apps on our ipads here at school. Different grade levels use different apps, so your student may not have tried all of these. Feel free to try them at home!
Singing Fingers - this app enable you to make sounds while you draw on the ipad. Then, you can play back your sounds.
Tune Train - this is a great way to create melodies by moving the 'train' or vehicle through different backgrounds. We will be using this to help kindergarten students visually and aurally understand that high and low icons have high and low sounds as well. This app also allows you to see a musical representation of what was just visually created.
Young Music Genius - First and second grade classes will be using this app to familiarize themselves with the instruments of the orchestra. In music class we introduce many instruments and aim for the children to be able to identify them by sight, name and by sound. This app enable the children to become more familiar with orchestral instruments through recordings and games. It also has a component that features great works by great composers.
Brain Pop Jr. - This site has wonderful, concise videos that help explain concepts discussed in class. Second grade music classes study the science behind sound production. "What is sound?", "how are sounds changed?" and pitch and tone are some topics covered in these short videos. You may find you can't stop watching these....there are many on instruments and other fun topics!!
Here are a few more that we don't have on our ipads, but maybe you do!
Jazzy 123 - counting and musical instruments
Jazzy ABC - letters and musical instruments
Nutcracker apps - there are a few to choose from
Carnival of the Animals
A Jazzy Day
Musical Paint Pro
Blob Chorus - great practice identifying like and different sounds
